Help with School Clothing Costs

Local council support to help cover the cost of school uniforms.

Financial Support

Last updated: 5 September 2026

What it is about

This scheme helps parents on lower incomes cover the cost of their child's school uniform and PE kit.

What is involved

Unlike many other schemes, there is no national eligibility rule in England. The support is entirely discretionary and managed by your local council.

If you live in Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland, there are specific national grants available (such as the pupil development grant in Wales or the school uniform grant in Scotland).

Timeframes

You should apply through your local council well before the new school year begins.

What you benefit from

You may receive a cash grant or vouchers towards the cost of school clothing. Because rules vary by area, you must contact your local council to find out exactly what support is available to you.
