Free School Meals

How to check if your child qualifies for free school meals.

Financial Support

Last updated: 5 September 2026

What it is about

Free school meals ensure children get a nutritious lunch at school, saving families hundreds of pounds a year.

What is involved

There are two main ways children qualify:

  1. Universal Infant Free School Meals: All children in reception class, year 1, and year 2 at government-funded schools qualify automatically, regardless of your household income.
  2. Income-based Support: For older children, you currently qualify if you receive certain benefits, such as Universal Credit, provided your household income is £7,400 a year or less (after tax, excluding benefits).

Note: Starting in the 2026-2027 academic year, the £7,400 income threshold is being removed for Universal Credit households. If you get UC, your child will qualify regardless of income.

Timeframes

You do not need to apply for infant free school meals. For older children, you should apply through your local council before the school term starts.

What you benefit from

Your child receives a free, healthy meal every school day.
