Getting a Child's Passport
How to apply for a UK passport for your baby or child.
Last updated: 5 September 2026
What it is about
A child passport is an official travel document and a key form of ID. It is required for any child (under 16) travelling abroad.
What is involved
You can apply online or via a paper form at the Post Office. You will need a digital or printed passport photo of your child, and you may need someone to confirm your child’s identity.
Timeframes
There is no statutory deadline to get a passport. You only need one when you intend to travel.
However, GOV.UK advises that you should check how long it will take to get a passport before you apply, and strictly do not book travel until you have a valid passport.
What you benefit from
Having a passport ready means you can travel internationally as a family without stressful, last-minute rush applications.
