Birth Registration

How and when to register your child’s birth, a mandatory step before claiming certain support.

What it is about

Registering a birth is a legal requirement that officially records your baby’s arrival. You must do this to get a birth certificate, which you will need to claim benefits like Child Benefit, apply for a passport, and register with a doctor.

What is involved

You need to register the birth at a local register office. You'll usually need to book an appointment to do this. Once registered, you will be given the option to buy short or full birth certificates.

Timeframes

All births in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland must be registered within 42 days (6 weeks) of the child being born.

Note: If you live in Scotland, the deadline is shorter. You must register within 21 days.

What you benefit from

Getting the birth certificate unlocks everything else. It is the core document you need to prove your child's age and identity for government support, travel, and healthcare.
